EVAR013 - UVCORE - TALES OF THE SUN
Some music grounds you, and some music elevates you. UVCORE wants you to transcend; to detach from reality and tumble into a realm of the imaginary, where fantasy and euphoria are the orders of the day. The Italian producer’s highly anticipated debut album, Tales of the Sun, is a collection of melodic experimental club tracks that sound like dreams of utopian futures. “All I want to do is make epic melodic anthems,” he said. “I’m taking the genres I’ve always loved – hardcore, techno and trance – and fusing them into one otherworldly style.”
The vision for the album coagulated over a period of years. In 2017, Guidi moved to London, where he lived in a tiny room in a warehouse in East London. There were always people coming in and out, and parties were held on an almost daily basis. He went to hardcore and techno raves at clubs like Fold and Corsica Studios, including Evian Christ’s notorious Trance Party. “I was immersed in this exciting scene that was taking club culture archetypes and rave tropes of the past, but recontextualising them in a future-facing way. It felt like everything I used to love and now loved all at once,” he said. “I started writing the first tracks around then.”
On the song “White Fungus” glimpses of beauty are conjured by the delicate and twinkling melodies that rise above the thunderous 4/4 beats, and drive the music forward. The organic and inorganic melt into one, nature and machine, as earthly elements like birdsong are pierced by surging synths on “Cardio Nova”. The psychedelia is blended with the industrial on “Meadow Land”, and the colossal sonics of “Cryptoamnesia” are parted by the vocal hook of, “Do you feel free?” Guidi explained: “I wanted a sound that embodied the experience of clubbing or raving in the Italian Riviera, or experiencing the Love Parade in the year 3020.”
That atmosphere has been achieved. And it’s communicated even further in the album artwork: a high fidelity and maximalist illustration fizzing with sharp silvers and electric pinks. Just one question remains: Why Tales of the Sun? “Tales – because I see these tracks as pathways to fairy imaginary worlds detached from my hyper-rationalist reality,” said Guidi. “Sun – because the music is influenced by the 90s Adriatic Riviera vibe which was defined by sun, sea, clubs, romanticism, and sweet melancholy. I want to reinvent that aesthetic, and give people a reason to have faith in the future.”
