DETROIT IN EFFECT
Dj Maaco, a.k.a. Detroit In Effect, started as a drummer at age 6 playing for a small church, by age 12 he dropped the sticks, got himself a cardboard box and started break dancing! By 14, he was drawing turntables and mixers on his cardboard boxes, scratching, cutting, and pretending to rock parties. He convinced his dad to buy him a mixer from Radio Shack and bought himself a turntable with an 8 track tape player built in. He later met Kool Keith at age 16, inspiring him to begin producing his own music after showing him a shoebox full of cassettes produced with a Roland 808 and Juno 106. Maaco’s first release was in 1992, with a group called “One Nation” and later formed M.A.P. Records after connecting with DJ PDOG. They released their own music as Detroit In Effect under their own label, playing shows across Europe and the UK.
DJ Maaco creates raw, insistent electronic music that moves bodies; few can resist the rhythms and hooks that he throws down with an attitude that represents ghetto grooves in their pure, unfiltered form. Detroit In Effect is best experienced flexing his knowledge and skills behind the decks, a long history of musical appreciation standing behind him, spinning elite mixes dirty enough to satisfy the sleaziest party or clarity of tone to inspire the most informed minds.
